Looking Back at our History PDF Print E-mail

Histon Salvation Army Corps (Church) is officially 112 years old this month but before that there was a flourishing outpost as was discovered in a report taken from The Salvation Army’s newspaper, The War Cry, in the edition of 13th June 1891. Excerpts from the report were as follows:

To Captain Punchard had fallen the happy lot of visiting Histon, a flourishing outpost, for the Sunday afternoon and night meetings. The little barn was crowded at each meeting. The Juniors were a great help, they sang and spoke, and came to the open-air. God bless them. Lieutenant Wall has taken charge lately, and he reports souls almost every week.

According to our Historian, Joan Foster, the History Book also records previous Anniversary weekends such as the:

75th Anniversary
In 1967, the 75th Anniversary was celebrated during the leadership of Major & Mrs Arthur Brown. A reunion weekend was held in which a number of people who had moved away returned for this occasion. The Sunday meetings were conducted by Captain Emmanuel & Mrs Alma Miaglia. A windup followed the meting in which Bandsman Robert Wilson and Corps Cadet Guardian Jennifer Wilson farewelled from Histon as they returned to Stotfold. They will be greatly missed and were thanked for all their hard work.

100th Anniversary
During the month of November, the Sale of Work (Winter Fayre) was the event except during the Centenary year. At that time, Lieutenants Nigel & Kim Gotobed were the commanding officers. During the centenary weekend, Major John Carmichael led a united songsters and Bandmaster Robert Carmichael, with his father, Retd Bandmaster, Ken Carmichael, led a Reunion band. The special guest leaders for the weekend were Commissioner & Mrs Carl Eliasen from International Headquarters in London.
