Captain’s Log December 2005

Dear Friends,

The Christmas season is now upon us and one reason I enjoy Christmas is the way families and friends get together and we all try to be of good will to each other!

Christians celebrate Christmas because it is about God getting together with us and offering His love and good will to us through the birth of Jesus Christ. The angel said to the shepherds that this is “good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” (Luke 2:10). I wonder how you feel about that? Is God the most important Person in your life or is He someone you think about occasionally? Do you wish God would do more in your life and in this world? Do you even blame God for some of the bad things that have happened in your life and this world? If you do, then let me just say that God is not about that, but what He does do is give us the strength we need to keep going.

If you’re reading this and you are not a Christian, then I urge you to give God a chance in your life, not just at Christmas but also throughout the year. Whilst life will not always be plain sailing I hope that you will find that love, peace, strength and security that only God can offer us. Give God a chance and you will find that He has a plan and purpose for your life. Give God a chance and you could find that God will use you to bring joy and goodwill to others and to yourself – not just at Christmas but the whole year round!

Finally, I would just like to conclude by thanking all the members of our church and volunteer family who help out in so many ways at our church and charity shop for The Salvation Army in Histon. We are very grateful for all that you do throughout the year to help The Salvation Army church in its service to this wonderful community we live in.

Louise and I wish you all a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.
May God bless you.

The Gift

Thanks for the electric guitar you gave me for Christmas," little Chris said to his uncle the first time he saw him after the holidays. "It's the best present I ever got."

"That's great," said his uncle. "Do you know how to play it?" "Oh, I don't play it," the little fellow said. "My mum gives me a pound not to play it during the day and my dad gives me five pounds not to play it at night.

C S Lewis’s Last Letter About the Narnia Books

With the film, The Chronicles of Narnia soon to be released, here is C S Lewis’s Last Letter About the Narnia Books

Less than one month before he died in 1963, C.S. Lewis wrote the following letter to a young girl who wanted to know if any other Narnia books were going to be produced. It turned out to be a fond and fitting farewell to all of his devoted readers.

Dear Ruth,
Many thanks for your kind letter, and it was very good of you to write and tell me that you like my books; and what a very good letter you write for your age! If you continue to love Jesus, nothing much can go wrong with you, and I hope that you may always do so. I'm so thankful that you realized the "hidden story" in the Narnia books. It is odd, children nearly always do, grown-ups … hardly ever. I'm afraid the Narnia series has come to an end, and am sorry to tell you that you can expect no more. God bless you.
Your sincerely,
C.S. Lewis

Three Wise Women!

You do know what would have happened if it had been three wise WOMEN instead of men, don't you? They would have asked for directions, arrived on time, helped deliver the baby, cleaned the stable, made a casserole, and brought disposable nappies as gifts!

The Lost Purse

A lady lost her handbag in the bustle of Christmas shopping. It was found by an honest little boy and returned to her. Looking in her purse, she commented, "Hmmm.... That's funny. When I lost my bag there was a $20 bill in it. Now there are twenty $1 bills."

The boy quickly replied, "That's right, lady. The last time I found a lady's purse, she didn't have any change for a reward."
