Captain’s Log August 2005

Dear Friends,

The holiday season is now upon us although as I write this thought there are grey skies and the news is reporting a tornado has hit the City of Birmingham. The weather may not be as we would expect for the summer holidays, but yes they have come around again.

In a society which talks a lot about stress and the effects that it has on people, we all know about the importance of taking time to rest. Yet, we are not always very good at resting for there is always something else that we can be doing and so we go from one activity to another.

While Jesus was on earth there was a constant flow of people wanting His attention, wanting to asking Him questions, seeking His guidance and wanting healing. Jesus could have spent all His time going from place to place meeting the people’s needs without taking time to rest. However, Jesus lead by example and took time out to rest and time to be with God. This meant that Jesus was revitalised so that He could continue to have an effective ministry with the people.

As Christians we need to follow Jesus’ example and take time out to rest. Let us seek to put aside the demands of everyday life and just take the time to be in the presence of God. Just as with Jesus, this time of quietness allows us to recuperate, seek God’s guidance and be revitalised so we like Jesus can have an effective ministry with the people that we meet.

‘God says, “Be quiet and know that I am God” (Psalm 46: 10). You may not be going away during this month, but take some time to be with God May you all have a relaxing and beneficial month of August.

May God bless you.

RETIREMENT OF DIVISIONAL LEADERS

Lieut-Colonels Howard and Patricia Grottick, who have served as the Divisional Leaders of Anglia Division for the last seven years retired at the end of July. We thank them for their faithful service and as a church we have been very grateful for all their encouragement and support to Histon in many ways during the last seven years.

Please keep them in your prayers as they enter retirement and pray that God will bless them in their future areas of ministry.

The Colonels added in their weekly Divisional Newsletter the following: “We really are overwhelmed by the cards and gifts that we have received. This has been both humbling and inspiring. We have received so many expressions of love over the last few days. Thank you. We look forward to meeting many of you again in the future.”

A Little Light Humour

At Sunday School they were teaching how God created everything, including human beings. Little Johnny, a child in the kindergarten class, seemed especially intent when they told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam's ribs.
Later in the week his mother noticed him lying as though he were ill, and said. "Johnny what is the matter?"
Little Johnny responded, "I have a pain in my side. I think I'm going to have a wife."

A little girl, dressed in her Sunday best, was running as fast as she could, trying not to be late for Bible class. As she ran she prayed, "Dear Lord, please don't let me be late! Dear Lord, please don't let me be late!"
As she was running and praying, she tripped on a curb and fell, getting her clothes dirty and tearing her dress. She got up, brushed herself off, and started running again. As she ran she once again began to pray, "Dear Lord, please don't let me be late... But please don't shove me either!"

Dear God,
My brother told me about being born but it doesn't sound right. They're just kidding, aren't they? - Marsha

Dear God,
If You watch me in Church Sunday. I'll show You my new shoes. - Mickey

Dear God,
I would like to live 900 years like the guy in the Bible. - Chris

Dear God,
We read Thomas Edison made light. But in Sunday school they said You did it. So, I bet he stole Your idea. - Donna
